As a company we have been involved in natural types of wastewater treatment processes for many years. Some of the challenges that these processes face are acceptance from the mainstream civil/mechanical engineering community who for decades have been the deciding voice in wastewater treatment technology selection. Natural systems have often been perceived as being “softly engineered” or “anecdotal” and that these processes could not be relied upon to consistently meet critical treatment levels and subsequent effluent requirements. The “Treatment Wetlands – Second Edition” book effectively demonstrates that natural treatment systems, when designed and operated properly, can indeed be relied upon in critical situations. The book serves as a useful tool in showing the “hard engineering” and science behind natural systems.
